Celebrity Eclipse Leaves Papenburg

Celebrity Eclipse began its journey down the Ems River today from Meyer Werft in Papenburg to the Dutch port of Eemshaven. The journey is under the watchful eyes of two tugboats due to the just-wide-enough openings in barriers and bridges it must pass through along the 42 kilometer transit.
The photo above and the two below were taken Thursday afternoon as the ship headed downriver. Remember, it's easy to misinterpret what you are seeing. We are used to seeing and thinking about ships sailing forward, but in all these, Celebrity Eclipse is actually moving backward, with the stern leading the way.

The photo above shows how narrow the margin of error is with only inches between the side of the ship and the opened bridge. Also note the sharp bends in the river the ship must navigate.

The photos below show the amazing sight of the 122,000-ton vessel on this very shallow river.

Celebrity Eclipse arrived in the Dutch port of Eemshaven Friday morning and is now preparing for sea trials. Celebrity Eclipse is the third in the five-ship order, and it will enter service next month from Southampton.
